Learn to play the cello!

Anna Fritz offers private cello lessons in northeast Portland, Oregon.

She specializes in adult beginners, but also works with teenagers and more advanced students. Anna has a strong focus on solid technique and cultivating a healthy ergonomic approach to the instrument. She is happy to tailor her curriculum to the individual student's learning style and the kind of music they want to play.

In NE Portland, Anna has maintained a studio of private students since 2009. She offers periodic ensemble classes for students within her studio to gain experience playing chamber music with other cellists. She also provides semi annual performance opportunities for students who are interested and willing to share what they're learning with each other, their friends and families.

Anna has been playing the cello for almost 40 years! She received her classical training in Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin, culminating with instruction from Professor Uri Vardi, student of Janos Starker. Since then, Anna has performed and recorded with numerous bands and artists of many genres. She has released three solo albums as a cellist and folksinger and spent seven years touring extensively with Portland Cello Project.

From Anna's students

“Anna teaches with creativity, generosity, and spirit. Her studio is a welcoming space for growth and experimentation with everything from producing huge sounds to technical problem-solving. I've been amazed at my progress in our lessons, working together through the mental and physical challenges of being an adult student.”
- Alison

“I've been incredibly fortunate to find Anna as my cello teacher. Her patient and understanding approach has been a healing balm for the scars left by childhood piano lessons. Learning cello as an adult has been a joyous journey.”
- Aileen

“Anna is an amazing teacher! Her kind and flexible approach makes lessons fun and stress free. I’m so glad Anna has helped me to bring the cello into my life.”
- Alex Reich

“…She was so patient with me during lessons and with the fact that I had a full-time job and couldn't practice as much as I might have liked to. She really understood how to talk to an adult trying to learn something pretty challenging. I particularly appreciate the way she weaved together playing music, learning notes and how to read music. It kept each lesson interesting and challenging…Anna is a beautiful human being and I am so fortunate to have found her. I highly recommend her for adult learners!”
