Lyrics

The Gospel of Tree Bark
by Anna Fritz

I’ve decided
for my own self
to believe you’re on a journey
‘cause it’s easier
on my broken heart
to pretend you’re coming home.

But I cannot
know for certain
where your path lies or where you’re bound,
so I offer up my heart
into the gathering dark.
I wait for guidance on the cold, cold ground.

Life is a prayer in the gospel of tree bark.
There’s a voice that whispers in the branches at night.
It says life has gone on and will go on forever
and you’re just a droplet, a small beam of light.

I am trying
with my whole self
to believe that I am valuable
‘cause it’s easy
in this broken world
to forget that we are whole.

When the tide of
pain and sorrow
comes in quickly and I’m afraid,
well, I trust that I am held
by hands that can’t be felt.
And there’s kindness not far away.

Life is a prayer in the gospel of tree bark.
There’s a voice that whispers in the branches at night.
It says life has gone on and will go on forever
and you’re just a droplet, a small beam of light.
