Lyrics

Mean Mind
by Anna Fritz

The spiders wove their webs
in the streets of the city.
People made love in their beds in their homes.
The women that I know
put noses to grindstones
and their art came alive
in rooms of their own.

Virginia, won’t you tell me
the gods that you prayed to?
Gertrude, won’t you just speak to me plain?
‘Cause I’m not the only woman who’s working
alone in her room with a mean mind to tame.

The bees closed up shop
at the end of the summer.
The last of the green beans froze on the vine.
The kitchen filled up
with apples and onions.
The smell of the wood smoke drifted inside.

And all of it tells me
which gods I should pray to.
Some days the sunshine speaks to me plain.
It says you’re not the only woman who’s working
alone in her room with a mean mind to tame.
